Three Lessons from Hamilton’s story for Elevating your Journey

This weekend, I caught the Sunday matinee of Hamilton at the Orpheum Theater in Omaha, an off-Broadway production that hit me like a lightning bolt. The cast’s voices—good Lord, those voices—wove through Lin-Manuel Miranda’s lyrics with a raw, soul-stirring power that left me humming and reeling. As a coach and consultant helping people and teams elevate their moments at work, I saw Alexander Hamilton’s relentless spirit mirrored in my journey. His life, brimming with ambition and human challenges, offers lessons for anyone bold enough not to settle for the status quo at work. Here are three that struck a chord, plus read to the end for an invitation to see what’s possible for you.

1. Write Your Own Story, Ferociously

Hamilton didn’t wait for an invitation. A scrappy immigrant with nothing but a quill and audacity, he wrote his way from obscurity to immortality—pamphlets, letters, and arguments that birthed a nation. As an entrepreneur and coach, I’m learning that same fire: your story is yours to forge. No one’s handing you a blueprint for greatness.

I see it in my clients—they pause, waiting for the “perfect” moment to step up or redefine their impact at work. But Hamilton’s life shouts: the moment is now. Grab a pen, a keyboard, or a megaphone, and start shaping your narrative. For me, that means pouring my heart into becoming the best possible executive coach and consultant I can be while making sure every blog post, unfiltered insight, and fearless conversation elevates my client's potential. I believe that every word you craft in service to others builds your legacy.

What’s your next line? What’s one move you can make today to etch your story into the world?

2. Lean Into the Chaos of Connection

Hamilton was fiercely independent like my daughter Evalyn, but he didn’t win battles or build a country by himself. From Washington’s steady hand to Lafayette’s flair to his tangled rivalry with Burr, he thrived in the messy dance of collaboration. Shooting for greatness in business and life doesn’t mean isolating yourself—it means building a trusting community of friends.

I’ve learned to surround myself with friends and mentors who ground me, peers who push me, and clients who inspire me. My clients are my partners. When we wrestle with their work challenges—navigating a tricky team vibe or seize a fleeting chance—we’re co-creating something real. It’s rarely neat, but it’s alive. Hamilton’s story reminds us: that progress sparks in the friction of connection, not in hiding from it.

Who’s got your back? Who can you call to sharpen your vision or keep you honest?

3. Chase Every Moment, but Guard Your Flame

Hamilton’s hunger was his genius and his undoing. He never stopped—writing, fighting, dreaming—until his brilliance burned him out in a fatal duel. As a recent founder of a coaching and consulting business, I feel that same pull to chase every opportunity, to pack every hour with hustle. But watching the cast belt out Hamilton’s story, I heard a quieter truth: you can’t elevate every moment if you’re running on fumes.

My coaching is about helping people focus. It’s not about doing everything; it’s about doing what counts. I’m learning to draw lines, to say no to good gigs so I can say yes to game-changers. Hamilton’s life urges us to seize the day but also nudges us to pick our battles with care.

What’s one moment you’re ready to make sing? And what’s one thing you can release to fuel it?
