Learned Helplessness (Podcast)
"It is the ability to choose which makes us human!" - Madeleine L'Engle
When it comes to living an essential life the problem isn't that we have a choice in the matter. The problem is that we have subconsciously given into a greater bully. It's called, Learned Helplessness.
The essential point I'll be making today is that the ability to choose cannot be taken away only given away or forgotten.
I’ll discuss chapter two of Greg McKeown’s bestselling book called, Essentialism. It's so important that you understand learned helplessness so that you might avoid falling into this trap that leaves good people without - and great people lacking.
From a strengths perspective this learned helplessness correlates perfectly from what I see when coaching others in their talent and strengths zones.
By understanding what your top five talent profile is and learning to claim and aim your strengths at projects and pursuits you help make yourself immune to learned helplessness.
Coaching Questions:
In what areas of your life have you experienced learned helplessness?
Are there any areas right now you need to change you're thinking?
How might you use this information to help a friend?
